Sudeki – Review

Post Rating

Oooh where to begin. The box art features a female character taking main stage so that has to be a good thing right folks? So I’m given this game and I’m hoping I’m gonna love it, I guess we’re all about to find out.

Sudeki is a role playing title featuring the characters of Tal, Buki, Elco and Ailish (why do they always have silly names?) as they go a wandering the land looking for adventure. There is (of course) the usual RPG elements such as a world in torment, magic crystals and machines that can change the destiny of things, but also something else, at times I was wondering if they’d got the genre wrong because it should really fall into the Action / Adventure / RPG genre given it removes many of the usual RPG elements in favour of a more action styled title. I wont go into the story too much because I don’t want to spoil it for you, it is, shall we say all rather story driven and I’m sure you know the sort of thing anyway. Good versus Evil, Dark versus Light and a lot of pretty characters trying to set things right.

Look at all the pretty colors!…. Graphically Sudeki is beautiful, it’s bright and it’s sharp with an almost Legend of Zelda amalgamated with Final Fantasy style feel. The world of Sudeki is imaginative and colorful. My eyes never tired of how pretty everything was. I’m not a techno-boffin so can’t tell you of frame-rates and polygons but to my rather untrained eye there was no slowdown and my eyes never tired of gazing at this world of wonder.

Music to my little pointy ears…. The sound effects in Sudeki are well done, it’s a shame the music is a little, shall we say, mismatched? At times I just felt the musical score did not match what was happening on screen. The voice acting, although not bad per say I found it a little odd with its mish-mash of accents and no real theme overall, dare I mention one of the characters also has an annoying voice? All in all the sound isn’t the best you’ll ever happen across in the RPG genre but it’s not bad as such, at times I was even pleasantly surprised by it. Perhaps when they cast this they wanted inclusiveness, next time though I’d go for one accent, even if it is the usual American.

Momma, read me a story…. Once upon a time there was a game called Sudeki, it had a reasonably good RPG story, though nothing that hadn’t been done before on many a platform, but then there was a plot twist, and quite a good one and things pick up and you’re excited… THE END. Yes sadly, and for very odd reasons, Sudeki’s story just gets interesting when you reach the end of the game and a bad ending it is, I was so let down I cannot begin to tell you, but then my expectations were high. Oh Dear. There are rumors of a Sudeki 2 title, perhaps they decided to end things like that for this reason? Perhaps they just lost interest just when it was becoming intriguing, perhaps great powers told them to finish the title NOW. I guess we’ll never know.

Grrl Gamer Angle…. Ladies will like this because it’s pretty, it’s got lots of colors and it’s easy… *cough – cough* …. Sorry I appear to have been taken over by some sort of male led vision of the games industry. This game holds the same appeal to all gendered players, whatever they may be and the same can be said for most titles I suppose. We girls just have to get used to playing male characters who rule the storyline, unless it’s a Lara title. At least this does have some female input character wise. On a side note it’s a shame they had to make her look like a working girl on the games cover.

Oh do try and be concise dear…. Overall this is a good title and not the GREAT title it was deemed to be from the get-go. I enjoyed my time with Sudeki but just felt the title was a little short given I finished it in around 9 hours, and as mentioned even when I had finished it, I felt like it had ended badly. There’s nothing inherently wrong with Sudeki, just lots of little tiny grievances that left me feeling un-sated. My advice to you my fellow gamers would be to purchase this game when it’s in a rather good SALE because it’s not a bad title, it’s a good title to have in your gaming collection, it’s just not worth the full asking price given the length.

Aint that always the way with girls, size over content. *cough*
