Midtown Madness is at it’s heart a not too serious racing game which allows you to choose from over 30 vehicles (some of which are insane courtesy of some interesting downloadable content via Xbox Live) and race them in Washington DC or Paris. It’s simple controls mean it’s easy to get to grips with and perfect for short bursts of gaming when you just want a bit of fun.
Although this game is passable as a single player outing, it is on Xbox Live that the game truly comes into it’s own. Where the single player tasks can become taxing and repetitive the Live gameplay can be amongst the best on Xbox Live at the moment particularly when playing with Friends as opposed to random Flotsam (yes that’s my polite term for them, you know the ones I mean).
My only couple of slight complaints (and they are slight) about this game is firstly the lack of the now almost common place ‘Rear View Mirror’ that adorns racing games, for some reason the brains at Digital Illusions and MS opted to not include one, it’s a moot point I know, but I can’t help but think this would have been brilliant in particular whilst playing Hunter or Capture the Gold on Xbox Live. C’est La Vie. Secondly the soundtrack option, whilst superb on most games on this one it can become a repetitive nightmare. Lastly… More tracks please!!
All up however if you don’t have this game and you do have Xbox Live… what the hell are you thinking? Go out and get this game now! You wont be sorry… but be sure to arrange a game with folk of fun and right mind. Oh and get them to show you some of the ‘home rule’ games that people have invented such as the ‘take the loop to get on the roof of that building’ Last up there is a girl!! Oh… that would be me…
