Dynasty Warriors 5 – Review

You’re wrapped tightly in armor and you’re swinging your perfectly balanced weapon into the skulls of your enemy. Have you ever pictured yourself to be a Chinese Warlord? Well if this is the case Dynasty Warriors is the game for you. Now I know what a lot of you might be thinking “Dynasty Warriors Five!!!” But please, keep an open mind. The first thing that hits you is the beautiful graphics. When I say beautiful I mean it. It is absolutely breathtaking. This intro makes you want to play the game. It encourages you to firmly grip your Xbox controller and bash the hell out of the action buttons. This is where the fun begins…

This game has even more playable characters to choose from from previous Dynasty Warrior outings and a couple new female characters that you can play. Of course these women aren’t armored up, in fact more often than not have bare midriffs and push-up bras on. Personally I wouldn’t exactly feel safe going into war with no armor, but what do you expect, they are beautiful thin girls toting weapons that could cut you in half. They quite honestly kick ass!

There is the option to semi-customize your characters, changing their outfits and weapons. Changing the weapons is a necessary process as it makes your character harder (dah!); however the wardrobe type function is purely just for aesthetics and fun.

There are the standard modes that were present in Dynasty Warriors 4, such as Versus (have fun kicking butt against the computer or your pals), Free Mode (play whatever levels you want to help your chosen character advance and gain EXP. This has no continuous story.) Musou Mode (story mode). Also as with previous Dynasty Warriors is loosely based on historical events, there is also an Encyclopaedia option which has a full list of characters and a very brief background.

As I mentioned previously, this game is EXP based so it’s very important that you kill head officers and not just random dudes. This makes your characters much stronger and enables the weapons your character has to become tougher and more deadly.

The best part of the game, I feel, is playing Musou Mode with a friend. Not only do you get to spend quality time with a pal, slaughtering the bad guys with your best pal at your side, it is also possible to progress through the story just the same. It actually makes it a lot easier to complete the levels. I shall warn you though, don’t play this game on story mode if they haven’t played Dynasty Warriors before; this is a danger to your friendship. Things can get rather heated if one of you dies whilst trying to kill the head officer. You have been warned!

This game is so addictive and that’s fantastic in a game, however, I feel if you’ve completed other Dynasty Warriors it can also get very repetitive and dare I say boring. Maybe there is only so much conquering China that one can handle. It would be interesting to have something new done with the Dynasty Warriors titles. One huge difference between this title and the Dynasty Warriors previous is that they have the voice talents of actors which tell the story as you progress. It is also subtitled which means hearing impaired gamers can also follow the story no problems.

So, on a negative note it is very like the 4th title. Although it cannot be denied, the graphics are superb on this game; the game itself is almost identical to Dynasty warriors 4. It would be best to ask yourself, do you really need this title if you already have the 4th one. However, any new gamers unfamiliar with the Dynasty Warriors games should definitely pick this title up if you enjoy tactical war games. It is so much fun and as I said before very addictive.

Thumbs up – the graphics are outstanding and it is just as fun as the 4th Dynasty Warriors.
Thumbs Down – it is so similar to the 4th title, it isn’t as compelling because you may feel you’ve already played it.
